Make the critical reading section in SAT a fun game!

Many students are not confident with the critical reading section in SAT, but if you treat it as a game, all you need to do is to know the rules, you will find it fun and easy to win. Below are some “rules of game” you should remember

- First, answer the questions yourself before looing at the multiple choices. This helps you opt out the wrong answers as well as the common “traps”.

- Second, find important information. The reading can be very long and full of irrelevant details, thus you should focus on the big picture first: the main idea, the author’s point of view, the purpose of the writer… as you can always go back to the passage to find any details when needed.

- Third, keep asking questions: What does this passage mean? Why did the author mention this detail? What does that phrase mean?... By doing this, you will remember the main idea of each passage. This is an essential skill if you want to win the pairing passages section.

- Fourth, know all the common wrong answers. Be careful with extreme words such as “always”, “never”, “none”, “only”…, too broad or too narrow answers, choices that are true but do not answer the question…

- Fifth, learn the vocabulary. Having a strong vocabulary will make you more confident in this section.

- Last but not least, practice as much as you can. You may have heard this advice many times, but it is still a very effective strategy.

Follow all these above advice and it is guaranteed that the critical reading section will not be your obsessive fear anymore!
