How to Effectively Prepare for the TOEFL Test

Step 1:  View available testing materials.

  • To become familiar with different parts of the test, use the TOEFL iBT online tour at www.ets.org/toefl or view a complete sample test in the TOEFL Practice Online site at at www.ets.org/toeflpractice
  • Test takers who also join TOEFL Practice Online receive a free membership to the TOEFL Access Online community, a tool that provides information on studying in English-speaking countries.
  • To become familiar with how responses are evaluated, visit the Speaking and Writing Rubrics in the ets.org website
  • Receive a free TOEFL iBT Sampler when you register for the TOEFL iBT to become familiar with question types and test formats.

Step 2:  Take a practice test online.

  • The TOEFL Practice Online at www.ets.org/toeflpractice provides a helpful exercise towards successful TOEFL testing.
  • Test takers can choose to take the practice test under timed or untimed conditions to familiarize themselves with the testing pace. It will also help them get used to taking the test using headphones and to the directions for the different testing sections.
  • On finishing the practice test, test takers will get score reports and performance feedback to help them see their strengths and weaknesses.  These reports are different from the official TOEFL iBT score reports.

Step 3:  Spend more practice time on improving your weaker skills.

  • After you have determined your weaknesses from your practice test score report and performance feedback, use the targeted practice sections using the TOEFL Practice Online found inthe skill-building tips pages in ets.org
  • Use the Official Guide to the New TOEFL iBT.
  • Monitor your progress.
  • Take a complete practice test in the TOEFL Practice Online to assimilate a real testing experience.

Step 4:  Apply Proven Test-Taking Strategies.

  • Carefully follow directions in each section so that you do not waste time.
  • Use the Help section only when absolutely necessary because the clock does not stop when a test taker is in the Help function.
  • Stay calm and do not panic.
  • Concentrate on the question at the moment and do not think of how you answered previous questions.
  • Avoid spending too much time on one question.
  • Eliminate as many choices and choose the best answer if you don’t know the answer after some considerable thought.
  • In the Reading section, to save time, only review answers after all the questions within a subsection have been answered; but remember that     reviewing answers must be done before moving on to the next subsection because subsections cannot be re-entered once a test taker has move on to the next.
  • Be sure to have enough time to answer every question by pacing yourself.
  • Know how much time you have for each section; to avoid rushing at the end, budget the time you will use for each question.
  • Monitor the clock even if you choose to hide the clock during testing.
  • When there are only five minutes remaining in the Reading and Listening sections, the clock will give an alert. The same is true for the Writing section’s Independent and Integrated Tasks portion.
