How to apply to a boarding school?

4 steps to apply to a boarding school
By GPA Admin

How to apply to a boarding school?

First, contact the schools and ask them for their application requirements and deadlines. Many schools have a fixed admission calendar with set dates for applying and admission notification. Some schools offer rolling admission, which means they will accept applications on a space-available basis throughout the year or after published application deadlines. Has the deadline passed? Check out AdmissionsQuest's new (free!) eBook: Applying to Private Schools After the Deadline.

In addition to deadlines, also ask schools about the required tests for student applicants. If interested, also ask for need-based financial aid and merit scholarship information and deadlines. Keep all these application deadlines together in one place.

Second, arrange to take the required tests. These generally include one or more of the following:

  • SSAT (Secondary School Admission Test) - call (609) 683-4440

  • ISEE (Independent School Entrance Examination) - call (800) 989-3721

  • TOEFL Junior (Test of English as a Foreign Language) [for international students]  - call (609) 951-1100

Third, complete and forward applications to the selected schools. Find out if the schools accept the TABS Admission Application. Most do, and using the TABS application cuts down on the duplication of paperwork. Follow up with teachers, coaches, and registrars to make sure they've sent the recommendations or transcripts they're submitting.

Fourth, complete any aid or scholarship applications. Refer to this financial aid section for more information.
